UK Health & Safety Science & Research Conference 2009
This conference is designed to present and analyse the latest thinking, research and developments within the Health & Safety field. The day will have a particular emphasis on current research, and findings/conclusions which will be of interest to H&S practitioners, and may have an immediate application in their work environment. It is an excellent opportunity to keep abreast of the real cutting edge developments within the health & safety field.

Keynote Speaker

Science, Health and Work - the Role of Epidemiology
The Health & Safety Executive makes widespread use of applied science in furthering its aims of reducing risks to health and safety from workplace activity. Much of the research it undertakes or commissions is about achieving practical solutions to the control of hazards. But HSE also needs continually to keep abreast of the actual risks faced by those at work so that it can assess the effectiveness of controls and identify unrecognised or newly emerging risks. Epidemiological research, including surveys in the general population, are an important element of HSE's overall science strategy.

The Evidence Base in Health and Performance of People at Work

The British Occupational Health Research Foundation is an award winning charity that organises research on health and performance of people at work that is:
• of direct application at work
• high impact
• of international relevance

The presentation will look at the evidence base on what helps people with stress get back to work and stay in work; what works with people with musculoskeletal conditions; it will look at emerging findings on occupational dermatitis; key steps in managing people with occupational asthma. The presentation will also signpost to sources of evidence.

Integrating Systems & Partnerships

Close Partnering:
A Practical Model to Improve Health and Safety Compliance

Engaging with suppliers and contractors to improve health and safety is an important part of the work of a client organisation such as the Highways Agency. This paper demonstrates a practical model that has delivered improvements in both the level of safety compliance and rate of improvement throughout the industry. It details the mechanism of close partnering used to achieve these as well as the key elements that have been embedded in the close partnering model to ensure that it remains effective. Specific examples are included from the perspective of the client (Highways Agency), contractor (Carillion plc) and organisation responsible for qualitative monitoring and evaluation (TRL Limited).

The Relationship Between Work / Working and Improved Health, Safety and Well-being
This project has reviewed scientific evidence on the effects of different types of work (or job characteristics) on health benefits, increased well-being and safety. A multi-method approach has been used to examine what measures are available to assess health, safety and well-being and what characteristics of jobs are “good” for health. The relative importance, effect sizes and optimum combinations of these factors has also been examined. In addition, new quantitative research is being undertaken to increase the knowledge base of cause and effect relationships between work and health, and the relative balance of adverse and beneficial effects of different elements of work.

Design, Implementation and Evaluation of Health & Safety Training Interventions

Safety interventions at an organisational level, particularly those which are designed to impact on the company's safety climate over time, are rare and evaluation of the effectiveness of such safety interventions even more so. This presentation details the design and implementation of health and safety training in a range of organisations, with the aim of determining the impact these interventions have on the organisational safety climate, as well as the effect on employees' attitudes and behaviour. An overview of the progression of the project, highlighting indicators of best practice and reporting on initial results.

Dr Sharon Clarke
Reader in Organisational Psychology, Manchester Business School, University of Manchester.

The Safe Learner Blueprint
The health, safety and welfare of learners are fundamental values of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). This presentation will review The Safe Learner Blueprint, a template designed to assist organisations in developing individuals as part of the life long learning experience and how successful application will result in an individual who can demonstrate safe behaviours, an awareness of risk assessment and control, and will provide a set of transferable value added skills that can be utilised in any learning or working environment. There will be specific emphasis placed on research carried out by the Institute of Employment Studies on behalf of the LSC.

Health & Safety Partnerships: Leveraging, Collaborating and Engaging
Partnerships between regulators, public agencies and other stakeholders have been promoted and pursued as a more effective way to achieve health and safety goals. A presentation of the research (completed for the Health and Safety Executive, Communities and Local Government, Food Standards Agency and Sports Council for Wales) into the nature, role and outcome of partnerships in the context of residential fire safety, occupational health and safety, food safety and sports promotion. Analysis of the impact of partnerships on injury rates, safety management standards and culture change, cost effectiveness and assessment of the features of effective partnerships. It will detail a ‘policy model’ to inform future engagement and support of partnerships, along with suggestions on further development of good practice. It will provide valuable lessons learnt on the evaluation of partnerships and how best to build evaluation into future programmes.
