This event is a must for professionals concerned about environmental legal compliance and covers all the key changes over the last 12 months. The one-day programme addresses the key elements of recent and emerging legislation so that you can stay ahead in protecting your organisation.

The seminar provides invaluable updates in environmental law and policy for organisations, and a base from which they can ensure legal compliance. An essential day for those who are either directly involved in delivering an organisation’s environmental responsibilities, or those who simply have an interest in keeping up to date with environmental law and policy.

Who Should Attend?

All those with responsibility for ensuring environmental legal compliance within their business and those who are seeking to improve their understanding of current or emerging environmental law and best practice. Management System Representatives and any Manager with environmental responsibilities will find this to be an invaluable one-day update.

On completion of the course, attendees will:

  • Be up to date with the key changes made in policy, legislation, and enforcement over the last 12 months, including the UK’s continued transition away from European Regulation;
  • Have a view of upcoming changes in the regulatory landscape.

The main topics and anticipated programme timings are detailed below. Note, some amendments may be made in advance of the seminar, to ensure that the agenda is as current and forward-looking as possible.

Important Acts – what they mean and where they are up to:

A key new Act – the Retained EU Law Act

The Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Act 2023 eventually passed through both houses and received Royal Assent on 29 June 2023, but it didn’t have an easy ride and looks significantly different now from what was originally proposed.

Find out what got through and what didn’t, and what it means for the UK’s future legislative landscape.

What has been happening under the Environment Act?

Since 2021 the Environment Act has been the UK’s framework of environmental protection, plugging the gap that appeared when we left Europe and lost our direction from Brussels. Constantly progressing, we now have the Environmental Improvement Programme, or ‘EIP ‘23’. You’ll get the latest information on what it is, the latest Environmental Targets, their implementation and progress.

The Legal update:

Find out about new and amended regulation, including:

  • Extended Producer Responsibility;
  • Plastics and the Plastic Packaging Tax;
  • The Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) update;
  • Persistent Organic Pollutants;
  • Climate Change; and
  • Decarbonisation.

We will find out where we are up to with establishing the new Best Available Techniques framework.

Environmental Outcome Reports:

A new form of environmental assessment known as Environmental Outcome Reports (EOR). Designed to replace the existing system of Sustainability Appraisals, Strategic Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments and make the process simpler and more focussed. However, there are fears that the new scheme lacks clarity. We will find out where the proposal has got to and discuss the implications.

Biodiversity Net Gain:

Coming into effect in November 2023, we will look at the requirements and available systems and guidance to help you through.

New and revised policies and strategy documents:

Taking a look at updates to air, energy and water policy, and an update on the workings of new UK schemes such as UK-ETS and GB-F Gas.

Unlimited Civil Sanctions:

What might they mean for you?

Direction and Horizon Scanning:

What do you need to watch out for in quarter 4 and ‘24?
