CDM - Enabler or prohibitor?
Review of prosecutions under CDM. The Construction (Design & Management) Regulations provide a framework for safely managing construction projects - do they enable or prohibit your organisation. We will explore the intent of the Regulations and how you can build processes to provide real value.
Significant cases and legislative changes
A summary of legal cases and changes in law over the last 12 months. Analysis of the implications for organisations, with pointers to where greater detail will be provided in later sessions.
10.40: Coffee Break
10.55: Control of Contractors - Are you doing enough?
A frequent factor in safety prosecutions, control of contractors is not a new topic, but are you doing enough? In this session we will apply a management systems approach to show what needs to be done
Health and wellbeing - what's changed?
- an analysis of where the HSE have got to with their focus on stress management
- what happens when it goes badly wrong - the employer's responsibility
- could the 4-day week be the answer to reducing workplace stress?
Working at Height - Are we getting there?
Working at height is not just a problem for the construction industry as demonstrated by the range of safety cases, but it is still one of the biggest causes of workplace fatalities. We will review recent cases and outline what needs to be done to prevent incidents occurring.
12.25: Lunch Break
13.10: Your questions answered
If you submit a question during the morning that we haven’t answered yet, we will try to answer it
during this session or at the end of the day.

- determining who is (or might foreseeably be) vulnerable
- how far do you have to go to protect workers?
- what is your responsibility to non-workers (customers, visitors)?
Machinery safety - Adopting a lifecycle approach
When introducing new machinery we need to make sure that it is fit for purpose and safe. We will consider the lifecycle approach to machinery safety and the impact of BREXIT.
14.05: Tea Break
14.15: Natural hazards - acts of God or foreseeable risk?
- Recent cases with significant penalties have made it clear that employers and land owners have liabilities for harm from nature

- What it means for you - even if you don't have a fleet.
Sentencing Guidelines - Remember potential harm?
A consideration of significant fines levied for safety breaches even where there was no accident. We will review cases where the fine reflected the potential rather than actual harm.
What to look for in 2024
- Where will tech take us in 2024?
- We look at the hazards of new tech - and the dangers of NOT adopting new tech.
- We will have a look at Martyn's Law, REU and challenge OSH professionals to get involved as enablers.
